Explanantion of Mercutio’s death

Tybalt insults Romeo in attempt to try and cause a fight. Romeo responds in a calm way and then Mercutio fights with Tybalt. Romeo tries to stop the fight and Tybalt stabs Mercutio and he dies shortly after. As Mercutio is dying he says “A plague on both your houses”. That means that he wants the Montague’s and the Capulet’s life to be a misery after his death. As Mercutio finishes saying that there was thunder and a big storm. That gives the situation a dramatic effect as thunder represents ‘God’s anger’ and death in a way. Also in those days curses and sayings like that were feared and were believed to have power. We as the audience know that Romeo and Juliet are going to die in the end but none of the characters do. Dramatic irony is that the audience knows the truth that Juliet is already married to Romeo.
